Herein, is cured meat safe during pregnancy?
Be cautious with cold cured meats in pregnancy Many cold meats, such as salami, prosciutto, chorizo and pepperoni, are not cooked, they're just cured and fermented. This means there's a risk they contain toxoplasmosis-causing parasites. Freezing kills most parasites and makes the meat safer to eat.
what meats can you eat when pregnant?
- Fish and seafood. -At least 2 servings of low-mercury fish a week (e.g. salmon, herring, trout, mackerel, and light canned tuna 1 to 2 times per week)
- Fruits and Vegetables. -Well-washed raw fruit and vegetables.
- Meats. -Fresh meats fully cooked.
- Eggs.
Cold cuts are now sprayed with a food additive that helps prevent Listeria before packaging. You don't need to panic if you are pregnant and have been eating deli meats. When it comes to deli meats it is important you know that the likelihood of being exposed to Listeria is low.
