Does granite need to be supported?

33
Quartz countertops often do not need support. Granite supports can be either functional, decorative, or both depending on your granite countertop installation. And unlike laminate countertops that do not require supports, natural stone countertops require some thought and understanding of why and how they will be used.

Regarding this, how do you support a granite countertop?

As a granite support guide, in designs where your countertop spans supports, the length of the span (side to side as your facing it) should be 16 to 20 inches. For designs where your countertop is cantilevered or overhangs the supports, overhanging portion should be limited to 2 to 3 inches from the outer edge.

One may also ask, how much support does granite countertop need? Granite thickness – granite tops with a thickness of 3 cm can have an 8-10 inch overhang without additional supports. If your granite top has a 2 cm thickness, we recommend attaching a support system should the overhang exceed 6 inches.

Beside this, do you need support for granite overhang?

According to the Marble Institute of America, you can safely overhang granite that is 1- 1/4″ thick up to 10″ without supports. However, the cantilevered portion cannot be more than 1/3 the total width of the countertop. So, we will need corbels or supports to keep the countertop from being in an unbalanced condition.

How far can granite span without support?

An unsupported span of 24” and up to a maximum of 36” is acceptable as long as the stone is supported on both sides of the span. Longer spans must be supported across the span. Over hangs should be not exceed 6” for 2cm granite, 10" for 3cm granite and 15" for 3cm quartz beyond the supported area.

Are my cabinets strong enough for granite?

Particle board cabinet boxes are strong enough to handle granite so they is no need for any concern here. The gap between cabinets where the dishwasher resides need only to have 3/4" plywood. Thus the need for 3/4" plywood placed over all the counter tops is best as I described in the earlier posting.
