Loosen the rocker arm stud on both valves and then tighten one up while slowly turning the pushrod with your fingertips. When the pushrod can't be turned then stop and adjust the nut down 1/4 to 1/3 turn more. Then do the other one on number one cylinder.

'Pre-soaking' hydraulic lifters in a bath of engine oil is a good idea, but not mandatory.
