automotive road side assistanceHow do you do a leak down test on a motorcycle?
Last Updated: 8th June, 2020
- Bring engine to top dead center (TDC).
- Remove spark plug(s).
- Remove Schrader valve from compression tester hose and insert into plug hole.
- Hook up leak down tester to 40psi shop air supply.
- Regulate leak down tester pressure to 20psi.
- Connect compression hose to leak tester.

Also question is, can you do a compression test with a leak down tester?
If you stopped reading right now, a novice might choose a compression tester. You can't use a leak-down tester without an air compressor or nitrogen tank. To use a leak-down tester, you remove the spark plugs as above and rotate the engine until the piston is at top dead center for the cylinder you are testing.
Additionally, how much is a leak down test? Use compressed air to blow away any debris from around the plugs first, so that it doesn't get into the cylinders. We paid $40 for our leak-down tester; prices range up to $300 or so.
Beside above, what does a leak down test determine?
Leak-down testing is a static test. Leak-down tests cylinder leakage paths. Leak-down primarily tests pistons and rings, seated valve sealing, and the head gasket. Leak-down will not show valve timing and movement problems, or piston movement related sealing problems.
How do I know if my valve seals are leaking?
When valve seals begin to wear or fail they produce some obvious and unique symptoms.
- Cold Engine. One of the most noticeable signs of worn or cracked valve stem seals will be just after a cold engine start.
- Idle and Stop and Go Driving.
- Off-Throttle Braking.
- Oil Consumption.
- Excessive Smoke.
