home and garden home appliancesHow much overhang can a granite countertop have without support?
Subsequently, one may also ask, how do you support a granite countertop overhang?
These overhangs have to be supported by steel braces placed under the countertop and then screwed into the wooden studs in the knee wall. Any granite countertops with more than an 8” overhang should be adequately supported by steel braces.
Considering this, how much support does granite countertop need?
Granite thickness – granite tops with a thickness of 3 cm can have an 8-10 inch overhang without additional supports. If your granite top has a 2 cm thickness, we recommend attaching a support system should the overhang exceed 6 inches.
The overhang for a countertop mounted in this fashion should be 18 inches to allow adequate knee-room when you sit at the countertop in a standard dining chair. For countertops used with a counter-height stool, you need a countertop height of 36 inches. The overhang need not be more than 15 inches on these countertops.
