Just so, what is back up heat droop?
When the backup heat droop is set to 2 F or higher and the backup heat upstage timer is turned on, the indoor temperature must drop to the backup heat droop setting or the backup heat upstage timer must expire before turning on the backup heat.
Then, when should you switch to emergency heat?
Short answer: You should only set your heat pump's thermostat to “emergency heat” when your heat pump stops heating altogether. And in that case, you should also call a professional for help.
As the outdoor air temperature drops, the heat pump needs to work harder, so it becomes less efficient. The COP continues to drop until we reach an outdoor temperature of -4°F (-20°C). -4°F is the lower limit of our air source heat pump effective temperature range.
