Focusing on just doing edges and doing spins reallyhelps too. -Rub some water on the insides of your skates andwear them around the house for awhile. Wet a pair of socks beforeputting on your skates, and then wear them around the house.Or just have a good skate shop punch out the ankles andanywhere else it hurts.

Similarly, when should you get new skates? Frequency of blade sharpening is upto player preference and how often you are on theice. Some players might want them sharpened after every game, butother players might get them sharpened once every threemonths. A general rule of thumb is every 12 hours ofuse.

Toes of both feet should be laying flat and NOT touchingthe ends of either skate. Take a walk in the skates.Heels of both feet should NOT lift at all, and should be snugly inthe skate.

Let cool for a few hours. In 99% ofapplications they will be fine to skate on after afew hours. That being said, if you are afforded 24hours until you need them, just do it. So don'tEVER put a heated stick or skate in a fridge orfreezer.

Can you bake your skates at home?

First things first, you can bake your skates inyour own oven at home. However, I wouldn'tsuggest it (nor would Glen), because you can ruinyour skates if you don't know what you'redoing. Glen uses a cold oven, which puts every piece of the skateto about 200 degrees and makes it very mold-able.

How do I know if my ice skates are too small?

If there is 1/2 inch or more in front of yourtoes the skate is likely too big. If thelength seems to be fine, it may be the width of the skatethat is too narrow or wide. Your foot should roll over theentire sides of the insole. If you can see the width of theinsole when standing on it, the skates may betoo wide.

How do you measure your feet for ice skating?

To find your width, measure the circumference ofthe ball of the foot in inches. In other words, measure all the way around the widest part of thefoot. If you only measure the bottom flat part ofyour foot, then you will not be able to determineyour skate width.

Should I lace my hockey skates all the way up?

I (usually) recommend that players lace theirskates snugly through the middle part of the foot (the partof the foot that needs the most support), but that above the ankle(the top eyelet of the boot) they should keep them somewhatlooser. For the same reason I do not recommend taping theankles.

There is no proven way to stretch skates on yourown, so the only option you have is to bring yourskates to skate shop to make sure you keep theintegrity of your skates. If after bootstretching or using shoe stretching liquid yourskates are too tight, consider buying a biggersize.
