Is the Chevy 402 a good motor?

72 402 is a low perf cast crank 2 bolt engine with those strange low compression heads that don't look like the 454 open chamber heads. In stock form it's a boat anchor, but with a bit of mild porting, a cam, and headers it can make an old Chevy go pretty good. The problem is it can also cost a bit to rebuild it.

What is the difference between a 396 and 402?

The 402 had a three letter engine code vs a two letter code for the 396. The big difference is the 402 had the alternator on the passenger side with a Long Water Pump. It's a dead give away at a car show if your worried about the correctness.

Are all 454 blocks the same?

The 427 and 454 have the same bore (4.25in), thus, any 427 low deck block can be built as a 454 simply by using the 454 crank (4.00in stroke). Some 427s and 454s have 4bolt main caps (and there were a few 4bolt hi-perf 396s), but, the blocks are still the same.
