What is Volvo coolant?

14
If you have a white block Volvo, which most Volvo's built after 1993 do, your car uses HOAT formula coolant which is also used by most BMW's, Mercedes', Mini Cooper and many other auto manufactures. The Volvo stuff is actually colored blue, kinda looks like an energy drink.

Keeping this in view, what color is Volvo coolant?

green

Does the color of coolant matter?

The truth is, color is not a reliable predictor for what type of coolant you have. For example, OAT coolants are usually orange, yellow, red or purple. Then the older IAT coolant is green. Coolants that manufacturers sell can confuse matters even more, like Honda's blue coolant.

Can I just add coolant to my car?

If the coolant level is low, add the correct coolant to the reservoir (not the radiator itself). You can use diluted coolant by itself, or a 50/50 mixture of concentrated coolant and distilled water. When coolant rises to the cold fill line, replace cap and tighten it until you feel it click.

What happens if you put the wrong coolant in your car?

Using the wrong engine coolant can gradually lead to corrosion and damage to the water pump, radiator, radiator hoses and cylinder gasket. This can lead to damage to the engine in the worst case.

Can I put water in my radiator?

Although water can be added to the radiator for this purpose, it's preferable to add a mixture of coolant and water because plain water can boil before the proper coolant will boil, causing your engine to overheat [source: pontiac]. A car radiator cannot work if there isn't enough coolant inside the system.

What Colour coolant should I use?

The color of healthy engine coolant is green (for ethylene glycol) or orange (for Dexcool). A rusty color indicates that the rust inhibitor in the coolant has broken down and it can no longer control rust and scale buildup.

Is coolant the same as antifreeze?

Antifreeze is commonly used as one of the components of a coolant mixture – coolant is generally a 50-50 split between antifreeze and water. Antifreeze (specifically the ethylene glycol, which is its main ingredient) is used to lower the freezing point of the liquid that circulates around the engine of a vehicle.

Evidence shows it reduces water pump life in certain Japanese import cars. Prestone Regular or 50/50 is a silicate free OAT antifreeze. It uses phosphates to replace the silicates.

What does coolant do in a car?

The main purpose of the coolant in your engine is to remove the excess heat through the radiator. Engine coolant is also called antifreeze because chemicals are added to keep it from freezing in cold climates so you can continue to operate your vehicle.

How do I know if my coolant is Hoat?

One way to know for sure if you are getting HOAT will be by the packaging. Manufacturers often refer to this anti-freeze as “global” and will indicate on the bottle that it meets or exceeds the specification “G-05” for most European cars and G-11 or G-12 for Volkswagen and Audi.

Can I use water instead of coolant?

Coolant/ Water Mixture, Not Just Water
The short answer is that it's a bad idea to pour pure water into your radiator, no matter what your climate conditions are. A proper coolant mixture is essential to the proper operation of your engine's cooling system and to its long life.

Can I put water instead of coolant in my BMW?

I wouldn't risk driving cross country with water as coolant. The engineers spec for the cooling system is 50/50 BMW coolant, distilled water only. The coolant has corrosion and rust inhibitors and water pump lubricants. It's easier to just follow the instructions the engineers laid out for the engine.

Does a BMW need special coolant?

Coolant & Antifreeze
BMWs have specific coolant requirements (nitrite and phosphate free) to prevent build-up and corrosion of aluminum components, so not just any off-the-shelf antifreeze will do.
